Global visitors for Ballast Water Training

19 November 2019

The Ballast Water Centre recently hosted a ballast water sampling training course for members of staff from Astar Labs, Singapore.

During Astar Labs', the group worked through ballast water problems and solutions, looking at treatment systems, sampling techniques and guidelines. They were able to observe the ballast water sampling set up in the Centre's laboratory, and visited Cattewater Harbour Authority and the oil tanker M/V Med Adriatic.

Tim Fileman, Ballast Water Centre Manager, said: “I have just spent two and a half days training Astar Labs from Singapore how to sample ballast water on ships. They were three lovely people and we had great fun together learning all about how to sample ballast water for efficacy, commissioning and compliance testing of ballast water treatment systems on ships."

"The course culminated with Cattewater Harbour Authority kindly facilitating a visit for us to see first-hand what sampling on a small oil tanker might be like. We were looked after very well by the captain of the M/V Med Adriatic who plied us with lovely Turkish tea too! Our relationship with Astar Labs will continue following this course, with a joint business opportunity already forming between us.”
