Applied marine scientist, Heidi Tillin, is part of the PML (Plymouth Marine Laboratory) Marine Ecology and Society Group and PML Applications. With over 20 years of experience in marine environmental research and consultancy, Heidi has a proven track record of successfully managing and delivering projects.
Heidi’s experience includes:
• Management of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs)
• Natural capital and ecosystem service approaches
• Marine and coastal ecology
• Marine Net Gain and habitat restoration and enhancement
• Managing marine projects
• Marine policy and decision-making
• Sensitivity and risk assessment of human impacts on marine habitats, including fishing, anchoring, aggregate dredging, recreation and environmental change
Heidi’s work in influencing policy and creating frameworks spans many projects, developing criteria and tools for assessing the sensitivity of habitats to marine activities, developing marine indicators, and systematically evaluating habitat irreplaceability and restoration feasibility for marine and coastal UK habitats. Her work has informed decision-makers, shaping management strategies within MPAs, providing science-backed recommendations for habitat protection and restoration to identify areas most susceptible to human activities.
Heidi’s work has led to the publication of complex scientific findings that she has translated into actionable recommendations for policy and conservation efforts, alongside producing best-practice guidance for biodiversity resources, applying natural capital approaches and marine monitoring, including citizen science. Heidi regularly engages with stakeholders and has active clients across a range of environmental sectors.
Heidi’s previous role as a consultant archaeologist remains a passion, leading her to occasionally work on projects involving marine archaeology and the historic environment.
