Joel Dunn is a Skipper and Marine Technician, providing support to all the centres at PML Applications, with a focus on marine science and offshore operations. He works for both Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML) and PML Applications, contributing to the safe and effective delivery of scientific surveys and fieldwork at sea, bringing extensive practical knowledge in fishing vessel operations, vessel ownership, and hands-on work across a range of marine environments.

Joel’s experience as a maritime professional includes:
• Commercial fishing
• Vessel operations
• Offshore marine work

Joel’s qualifications include a Fishing Class 2 Certificate and a Master 200 GT / OOW 500 GT.

Outside of his role at PML Applications, Joel sits on the boards of the Cornwall Fish Producers Organisation (CFPO) and the Plymouth Fisheries & Seafood Association (PFSA). This active connection to the commercial fishing industry provides insight into the challenges and priorities facing fishermen, processors, and coastal communities. He thrives on working in collaborative environments where experience from different sectors contributes to positive outcomes for the marine environment and the communities that depend on it.

Making the transition from fishing and vessel operations to the marine science sector allowed Joel to contribute to improving communication and understanding between fishermen, marine scientists, and wider marine industries, using practical knowledge and scientific evidence to support the development of sustainable marine management and offshore development.
