His work for the JNCC (Updating the uASM) and the EA (Reviewing eDNA monitoring methodologies) has showcased his expertise in systematic evidence reviews and complex data analysis.
Michael has extensive experience in marine monitoring, designing and leading ecological surveys for both mobile and non-mobile species and habitats. Over the course of his career, he has conducted and led 50+ ecological surveys, employing diverse methodologies to collect and analyse data. In addition to leading fieldwork, he served as the primary bioacoustician for his research team, specialising in acoustic repertoire classification and soundscape analysis in both marine and terrestrial environments. His work has also involved close collaboration with marine stakeholders, including fishers and community groups, where he has played a key role in encouraging sustainable marine practices through consultations and outreach.
Michael holds First-Class Honours degrees in Marine Conservation (MSc, University of Plymouth) and Tropical Biology (BSc, University of Nottingham). His studies, along with hands-on experience in NGOs, have led him to contribute to marine research and conservation projects across Malaysia, Mexico, and Greece.
