Applied Marine Scientist, Guy Hooper will be discussing marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) as part of a new series called the South West Climate talks hosted by Oshen at their premises in Turnchapel Wharf on Thursday, 3 September at 18:00 – 19:30. He will be discussing key topics in Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal (mCDR) in a talk titled ‘Can We Engineer the Ocean to Remove Carbon, and Should We?’.

Guy represents Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML), PML Applications and the University of Exeter. Since recently completing his PhD research at the University of Exeter and PML, Guy has taken on roles at University of Exeter and PML Applications. He is an Applied Marine Scientist at PML Applications’ Centre for Coastal Technologies.
During his PhD Guy contributed to the SeaCURE project who piloted the UK’s first marine carbon dioxide removal facility. Guy’s study focused on the potential marine environmental impacts of Direct Ocean Capture, a potential mCDR method.
At the South West Climate talk, he will be discussing the SeaCURE project and providing an accessible introduction to mCDR.
This will include an explanation about how removing dissolved carbon from seawater helps the ocean absorb more CO₂ from the atmosphere, and why understanding the environmental impact is crucial as mCDR approaches move from research towards real-world application.
mCDR is being investigated as a possible viable route to reducing greenhouse gasses by leveraging the great potential of the ocean for carbon capture and storage but it is important that we proceed with care and assess the risks to the marine environment. Through scientific studies and research, PML and PML Applications are gaining a better understanding of how this might look in practice.
Guy will guide attendees through what mCDR is, why are we talking about it, and how it might work in practice as he looks at the realities of using mCDR to tackle climate change.
South West Climate talks are hosted by Oshen and take place every two weeks. They focus on the theme of understanding and predicting our atmosphere, oceans and climate, giving the floor to a guest speaker and following up with a group discussion. The aim is to bring together professionals across different sectors and disciplines in the South West.
